I read somewhere that the first 10 seconds after a period of exercise that gets your heart rate above 80-90% of its maximum is where you get the most development of the heart. So breaking a training session into short intense exercise periods with longer rest periods in between can help speed this development. This kind of training is generally referred to as interval training.
You can modify any cardio workout into an interval session. It helps if you already have a base fitness in that type of activity. Intervals help add a bit of variety to your exercise program and also give you a target to train to.
