Don’t drink water

It is commonly stated in health and fitness articles that we should all be drinking 2 litres of fresh clean water each day to avoid chronic long-term dehydration and the nasty effects that come with it. But what exactly do they mean by fresh clean water? For most Australians that means water from the tap. Melbourne tap water has been claimed to be one of the cleanest water supplies in the world. That may be true, but is it suitable for human consumption? Looking at the water quality data, Melbourne tap water appears “clean” with respect to amounts of harmful organisms and toxic metals. But there are two toxic chemicals intentionally added in significant quantities. They are Chlorine and Fluoride.

Let us begin with Fluoride.

The addition of Fluoride was confirmed by South East Water’s Communication Manager, David Cummins. He states:

“Fluoride is added to Melbourne's water under the Health (Fluoridation) Act 1973. Fluoride is added by the wholesaler, Melbourne Water. South East Water Limited does have a responsibility for careful management and monitoring of water quality to meet stringent standards as well as ensuring it tastes good, looks good and smells good.”

We all know that Fluoride is added to our Municipal water for the supposed dental benefit of the population. But many of us never stopped to think. What is Fluoride and where does it come from?
