Self-esteem
Without doubt the biggest barrier I see to improved performance on game day is low self-esteem. Most people, although they suffer from it don’t actually know what it is. I’ll spell it out for you.
Low self-esteem is a feeling of worthlessness. It is a subconscious belief that you do not inherently deserve. It may pertain to certain circumstances or may permeate everything a person does.
As a super performance coach I specialise in game day preparation for athletes from all disciplines. Regardless of their self-perception I am often able to trick them into performing without self-imposed limitation. But I have to be there. Awareness training is another means of overcoming low self-esteem by developing trust in a truth beyond mind. But for most, they miss the point, give up or are afraid to try.
After coaching at the first round of the Australian Beach Volleyball Pro Tour last week, I can honestly say that low self-esteem was rife. So many athletes, with so much quality training under their belts and often excellent tournament results to look back on simply falling apart; not allowing themselves to play as though they deserved to be there. I couldn’t care less if an athlete loses but to limit yourself because you don’t feel as though you deserve it is foolish.
