Continuing to take that next step

Putting one foot in front of the other, it’s an analogy everyone has heard before but when it comes to the sporting field few people seem to understand. “Huh?” you say, “I’m pretty sure I use my feet when I play sport!” Well that is not what it’s getting at and the basis of this article is going to be about what this analogy is trying to say. That is, don’t get bored!

When the statement is made to put one foot in front of the other, what it is saying is continue doing what you already are – what is working. If you are already winning the game or successfully achieving the goal why change the method of how you are doing it? Unfortunately I’ve lost the quote but Glenn McGrath (Australian now ex-cricketer and world-record holder for wickets by a fast bowler) put it well when he said, roughly, “My job was to put the ball in the same spot 99 times out of 100 and the results would flow from there.” Glenn McGrath didn’t get bored with putting the ball in the right spot and in doing so became one of the greatest fast bowlers ever.
