PETER (CHICO) JONES
Head Coach of the Victorian Beach Volleyball School
Victoria ’s highest ranked Professional Beach Volleyball Player
How long have you be doing BT with Haydn?
I started BT with the squad around May 2004 and have recently gone solo since June/July 2005.Â
You are unusual in that you started Brutal Training after already being a highly accomplished and recognised professional player. Where did you first hear about BT and why did you start training with Haydn initially?
I first became aware of BT by seeing Richard Coles and Mike Croxford being flogged (I mean trained) a few years back. I was drawn to both the intensity and intent of the training. After talking to H, I felt a connection with the philosophy of 'forging spirit' and self discovery. I wanted to explore this on a personal level and also felt that this would be a unique asset for the squad. Now that the squad has taken a back seat, I still wanted to continue with training on a personal level.Â
Do you feel that your training differs much from what you expected you would be doing?
Well, I thought I'd be a dealing with a lot more physical pain than I have been - instead, I find myself flabbergasted and mind-blown after each training. I like it. I've been training in volleyball for 20 years now - that's a lot of repetition, pain and sweat and while I know thee is a vital place for these elements of training, the awareness and intent focus of my training with H has me feeling like a teenager again.
How do feel that your self exploration has influenced your life outside of beach volleyball?
Immeasurably. It is hard to qualify but I feel much more focussed.Â
