How did you get into Brutal Training and why did you start doing it?
I got into Brutal mainly through my partner Richard Coles. We were training really hard at the time and trying to improve our volleyball skills. But we didn't come from a background of volleyball and traditional volleyball training, so we didn't have the skill level of a lot of the teams we were coming up against. We thought if we could get one advantage on the competition, it could be fitness. After getting done the same way in a couple of tournaments, we thought, "Shit, maybe there is something in what Haydn does. It's different, so let's give it a go". It's like life. You see something different but you can't quite put your finger on what it is, yet you know it works.
We played against two young guys who had been training with Haydn. At the time, we thought we would crush them, but they played a fearless game and we ended up drawing with them. The way they played interested me. We saw how hard they were training with Haydn and how dedicated they were, so we made a pact with each other to train like that for the next year.
How would you describe Brutal?
It's totally different from going to the gym, or going for a run. It's outside the box. The way he (Haydn) instructs you is tuned to you, to get the most out of you and your sport. So it's specific, both to you as an individual and sports specific as well.
