The Judo Olympic Warm-up

Back in the days of training with the enigma whom is Raoul Kent (the earth itself shakes at the mention of his name – see ‘Spread the Insanity’ issue 27) I was introduced to a training drill that was described at the time to be the warm-up for the Australian Olympic Judo team. This is one of those drills that has survived the test of time and to this day (18 years later) remains largely intact. This was my first foray into truly brutal training.

Here it is then…

- Find an area about 30x10m. We often do this drill on sand as part of Wednesday DAT.
- Begin by running around the perimeter 5 times forward
- Then 5 times backwards
- Then another 5 times side stepping to the right (don’t cross your feet over)
- This time to the left
- Hop around the perimeter 5 times on your right leg holding your left leg behind you in a thigh stretch position
- Left leg this time
