What’s your ‘Cut to the Face’?
In April 2005 I headed to Malaysia to train Richard Moir, the pro golfer, for a week before the British Open qualifying tournament. Since it was a 2 round event, Richard had wanted me to come over and watch him play the BO qualifier to get an idea on where he might be falling down, as his results had been poor of late. The week after this event was the Johnny Walker Classic in China, very prestigious and worth heaps of money. Richard saw the shortened tourney as a great opportunity to prepare for China.
Most of my preparation was done in the plane as I transferred my intuitive thoughts onto paper. The first discussion we had went something like this:
H: Why am I here?
R: To help me prepare for China.
H: Don’t you want to go the British Open? It’s the biggest event in the world of golf.
R: pause
H: Don’t you think you’re good enough to qualify?
R: I’m good enough.
H: You’re just not sure if you’re playing well enough?
R: Yeah.
H: So if you’re good enough, let’s go get ready for the British Open. F*ck China.
