Be at peace with yourself

There is no more powerful adversary than one who is at peace with himself. Most (99%) of the people I train want to get ‘better’. They want to be faster, fitter, healthier or more spiritually aware. They want to be better athletes, better businessmen or better fighters. These are all fine ideals but nothing compares to the warrior that is at peace within.

I have trained a lot of people from all walks of life. I have discussed and debated philosophy with many intelligent and a few enlightened minds which I respect to this day. One theme (and there are many) that exists with all great Masters that influence me is this; ‘They all are at peace with themselves’. They do not pontificate about ‘should be this’, they do not operate under an idealised premise and they are always true to themselves. Usually, there is much suffering and personal introspection involved before these individuals come to understand their true selves. Finally, an epiphany occurs, as in the case of Master Morihei Uyeshiba, where all the walls of self-imposed suffering suddenly crumble and a simple understanding prevails. This understanding is often expressed differently depending upon the individual and circumstances in question but it inevitably results in the attainment of inner peace. When you are at peace with yourself there can be no conflict as conflict originates from within. What are trophies, money or even enlightenment if you cannot be at peace with yourself? The saddest thing I see everywhere are people motivated by inner distress. Their beliefs, habits and behaviours are all indicative of an inner discontent that reflects a lack of inner peace. Harsh words, aggression, moodiness, aloofness and secrecy are all hallmarks of the discontented individual.
