Aikido’s Circle, Triangle and Square
Since the departure of Dexta from Brutal’s halls little or nothing remains regarding Aikido’s indispensable metaphor for energy exchange on this web site. It is an essential tool in my kit bag as a coach when it comes to explaining certain principles as well as simplifying strategy. For those of you that bought Brutal’s DVD you would still have access to our original material on this subject. What we first released on this web site was Dexta’s interpretation of the principle of CIRCLE, TRIANGLE & SQUARE. What we are going to cover here is, as best we can, Aikido’s original principle.
Also, in this issue of Train the Trainer in the MEMBERS’ SECTION we look at specific application of this concept in the coaching arena. As a coach, you may begin to find this principle incredibly valuable. Remember though, metaphors are metaphors; they are not the TRUTH behind the matter. They, like all things Brutal, only POINT TO THE TRUTH.
“Liberation is the destination beyond the map and its symbols, which only point to the truth (of the nature of reality) and is not the truth itself. This is what the Buddha meant when He said He had not spoken a single word of the Dharma, for the truth cannot be put in words, and can only be experienced.”
The Sword
The sword in Aikido is said to reflect the energies of circle, triangle and square. There is debate about whether the sword is useful in Aikido or not. As a spiritual training device I consider it indispensable. At least have a bokken (wooden sword) at hand. Not only does each shape have a unique energy movement principle attached, but at a deeper level symbolizes truly spiritual qualities. The symbols are considered unified.
