In this edition of Spread the Insanity we hand the reigns over to NRL (Rugby League) conditioning coach Leigh Woodbridge of the Canberra Raiders. Leigh has been extremely generous, not only in providing an insight into tackling as a whole but, more specifically, by delving into the psychology of effective tackling. I find this sort stuff fascinating and on behalf of Brutal, want to thank Leigh for his time and effort in providing us with this treasure trove of information.

Psychology
In the world of team sports there are two elements that all will have in common; attack and defence. Rugby League is a contact sport, which can be split into these two basic components of attack and defence. Defence involves a number of factors including structure, communication, organisation, tackling, wrestling and commitment.

Tackling is the ugly part, the side that is a battle between the attackers and defenders. As a defender you need to have the mindset that you want to dominate your opponent, stop him in his tracks, get him on his back, win the wrestle and be at marker ready before him. You need to win that little battle.
