Playing or Training

Play fightsAs kids we like to play. Our process of learning a new skill or improving an existing one is centered around playing rather than training. For me, a playful spirit is synonymous with rapid and effective learning. Being playful combines creativity, intuition and inspiration, all hallmarks of the unquantifiable aspects of personal development.

The further our development progresses in an area the more we seek improvement through regimented training programs. And that’s smart. Learning from others that have succeeded in your chosen activity and from professional trainers dedicated to performance enhancement is simply a necessary part of development as an athlete or in any activity.

However…

It is very important not to lose your sense of playfulness. Too many athletes I both see and coach are training without a playful spirit. It doesn’t mean behaving like an irresponsible juvenile but rather taking the time to enjoy, experiment and play with what you’re doing. I always try to inject a playful atmosphere around any training endeavour. There are so many benefits not the least of which is rapidity of learning.
